Chip and the Bee, Again

Hey all!

Remember last year when Cathy, Carrie. and I were in the Spelling Bee? Well, it’s that time of year again!

We will be participating in the Spirited Spell-off Spectacle on February 28, 2009 at Athens Tech.

This is a fund raiser for Athens-Clarke Literacy Council which is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that promotes and supports learning opportunities for adult residents in the Athens community. They believe that developing strong literacy skills enables learners to improve their chances for gainful employment, self-fulfillment, civic participation, and successful parenting.

Last year, our time raised over $800 which beat everyone else and we’d like to donate even MORE this year. You know why we can?

It’s a little thing called the internets. In other words, YOU!

Last year, every person who donated via my blog or Carrie’s was entered into a raffle for wonderful prizes. I’m not sure what Carrie is doing this year, but I have some ideas for mine.

Last year, Sara won (via my blog) and received a box containing books featuring such diverse subject matter such as Kenny Rogers, David Hasselhoff, and Joey Lawrence. Hey, yo, reading is fundamental. There is no telling what you might win this year! Art? Fan fiction? A visit from Chip? The sky (and my attention span) is the limit.

So, here’s what you can do. IT’S EASY. Click the button below, and send us some money. It could not be easier (unless it involved no clicking).

button removed — you can donate in 2010

Then, if you can, come on out on the 28th at 4:00 and watch us spell some words!

CBS 5: Family Calls Comic Book Racist

A Stockton family is upset over a comic book that they call racist.

Joey Boswell’s foster mother bought him a Captain Confederacy comic book for Christmas. It’s set in a world in which the south won the civil war, and the Confederacy is a world power.

Joey said he was offended after reading just a few pages.

The comic was published by a Marvel-Owned company 1986 and 1992. Marvel declined to comment on why it published the comic, saying only that marvel employees created it.

I have Captain Confederacy in my collection somewhere but I probably haven’t seen it since ’86. But, I don’t remember it being Marvel. But, seriously, who wouldn’t understand that a comic called Captain Confederacy might be somewhat racist.

She's Goth To Have It

The Accordion Guy posted a jpg of “She’s Goth To Have It” which is an Archie comic in which Betty decides to go goth. Good times, indeed. I will post a copy here also because you never know when those things will go away: Local copy of “She’s Goth To Have It”.

I am up late working on work stuff which isn’t really fun but it is necessary. Earlier, I went to a play and sat between a Bored Athenian and Knitamknit Then home and sleep between 9:45 and 12:00 and now this.

Don’t have any real plans for the weekend or Halloween yet. Not true, was invited to a party earlier tonight for Monday night. Weekend still open..

Wizard World Atlanta

Since I was planning on going back to San Diego next year for Comic-Con, July ’06 might be kind of comic crazy for me.

ICv2 News – Wizard World Atlanta 2006

Wizard World Atlanta 2006
Wizard’s Sixth Annual Show
July 21, 2005

Wizard Entertainment has announced a new 3-day pop culture consumer show, which will be held in Atlanta from June 30th through July 2nd, 2006. The Atlanta show is Wizard’s sixth, joining similar events in Chicago, Boston (see “Wizard Announces Fifth Annual Show”), Texas, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.

Wizard Entertainment’s Wizard World Chicago attracted an audience of more than 54,000 last year (see “Wizard World Chicago Over 54K”) making it the second largest pop culture convention in the U.S., trailing only the San Diego Comic-Con.

For its inaugural Atlanta show Wizard Entertainment has staked out prime mid-summer dates, which may cause some conflicts for game companies (because Origins 2006 is being held in Columbus, Ohio from June 29th to July 2nd) and anime/manga publishers (since Anime Expo 2006 runs from July 1st through the 4th in Anaheim, California).
