Vegetable Garden

Since I have no sun in my yard anywhere and frequently lament that I cannot get a vegetable to grow at home, my parents offered to let me share their garden space. They live not far from my office, so I’m going to stop by periodically after work to help and make off with a hunk of the harvest.
Yesterday we planted more pole beans. Daddy had some coming up, but suspects birds got a lot of the seeds, so we put out more and he put up a scarecrow that I found unconvincing, but hopefully it will deter the starlings.

We also made some hills for squash and cucumbers. Check out the cucumber seeds. Metallic! Daddy said they were treated, but I don’t know for what how or why.

There are just a few baby blueberries on the transplanted bushes.

I also pulled a bunch of weeds and inspected the tomatoes and helped Daddy cut up a branch that had blocked some light. My reward? Lots of beautiful lettuce. Mmmmm.

Daddy said he and Momma had a big asparagus patch in their first yard together, and he said I used to be crazy about it as a baby. Apparently whenever we’d pass by a field of something growing green, I’d point and say, “Asparagus!” Daddy picked out a spot to put in an asparagus bed, and he’s going to till it up this week and get some horse manure from Lanier, aka Sweet Boy, and we’re going to try it! (Now I won’t have to envy Liana’s plot quite so much.)
Washington Farms has strawberries ready right now. I hope to get over there soon to pick a few. I think the Roots CSA has something going on this weekend as well. If you like good fresh food grown nearby, you’ll be glad if you check them out.

Ha! Don’t envy it yet. Maybe next year.
