i’m interested in subleasing my 2BR/2.5BA townhouse on the east side. it’s a spacious unit that’s nearly 1250 square feet in a small, quiet complex that has only 2 buildings and 31 units in the whole place. the apartment has central heat and A/C, full size washer/dryer, dishwasher and icemaker and has energy efficient appliances. the back of the unit is wooded and has a small patio. it’s also on the athens transit bus line.
lealu and i have kept it super clean and in great condition, but now that lealu’s out of school and has moved out, it’s just more space than i want to keep up with on my own and further from work than i’d like to be. ideally, i’d like to have someone sign the sublease agreement before the end of december even if they don’t move in until january.

scrappy meets the kinkster!
kinky friedman opened the 2007 decatur book festival friday night at agnes scott college (my fine alma mater). once i found out he was speaking, i couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go and hear him in person. (plus, i knew that if it was anything like a usual asc event, there would be a chance to meet him and most likely a book signing.)
i am a HUGE kinky friedman fan — he’s third on my list of top five of people i would like to meet (only after tom petty and don imus). i grew up listening to don imus on wfan in nyc as a kid, and his show introduced me to kinky friedman’s work as a musician, writer, and finally a politician. when i say “huge” fan, well, i mean it. i have the poster to prove it.
so, chip and i headed down to decatur right after work and we made it in the knick of time. all the seats in the lower auditorium were filled, but we were fortunate to get seats in the balcony (dead center) before they closed down the place. (the fire marshall was there ready to write tickets, so they opened up another auditorium for overflow seating and projected his performance.)
the performance was GREAT! classic kinky. he started with his comedy act, moved on to “a montel style” Q&A session where he walked around the auditorium, and finished up with a few musical numbers. i was worried the scotties wouldn’t get the root of his humor, but his gags went over very well generally speaking. (he won them over when a lesbian cowboy from new york with the last name of friedman volunteered to be his first lady and he accepted. he lost a few of them with his classic song “get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed,” but for the most part the age gap was bridged and they got the joke.)

my favorite moment in the entire show was when he responded to a question about imus (which is what i would have totally asked him about). the question was, “how is imus holding up?” kinky’s response was priceless: “well, i like to say imus is a lot like jesus: they’re both coming back and they are pissed!”
just as i suspected, there was a book signing afterwards.

kinky was very sweet to meet and greet with a HUGE room of people. the line for the book signing literally went all the way out the door.

i was really nervous i would never get a chance to meet him and that he’d give up long before the line ended. i was probably the 10th to last person in line. literally. fortunately, the kinkster was a trooper and signed my copy of cowboy logic.

even better: he agreed to take a picture with me (complete with cigar) and was as polite as could be when i rattled off something about what a big fan i am, how much i love and respect his work and how it’s all imus’ fault i was introduced to him, etc.

the icing on the cake: little jewford performed with kinky and hung around for the book signing. coming off the adrenaline high of meeting one of my all-time heroes, i was feeling exceptionally brave and walked right up to jewford (his back was facing me), and placed my hand on his back to get his attention even though he was speaking with someone else. he spun around with alarming speed and, startled, i rattled off my verbal diarrhea about being a fan for him. i started to sort of wave and walk away thinking i might have interrupted something important, but he stuck out his hand and said, “and what is your name?” and i blushed and introduced myself. realizing he’d embarassed me, he immediately jumped into his schtick – “oh, i’ve heard so much about you! how are you darling? such a pleasure to finally meet you!” etc. he completely put me at ease, and i couldn’t have been more relieved and amused all at the same time. he was an absolute sweetheart and spoke with me much longer than i had ever anticipated.
all in all, i had a fantastic time! i will always be a fan, and i’m just happy i didn’t make an arse of myself.
