Good Stuff

I’ve been completely swamped at work, so haven’t had/don’t have much time to blog, but want to mention these things, since they might interest my vast readership:
I finally sat down and watched a movie. City of God. Beautiful, horrifying, amazing. And then at the end I learned it was based on a true story, which is heartbreaking. There’s a documentary on the DVD about the violence in the slums in Rio de Janeiro that is incredible to watch too. It’s pretty slanted one way, but defintely worth watching nonetheless. I highly recommend this to everyone.
Last night I went to see the free viewing of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at the Georgia Museum of Art. It was fantastic. The colors are amazing, particularly in all the wallpapers–fuchsias and oranges and royal blues all together. It’s a musical, but nothing like what “musical” means to me. Every line is sung, more like an opera, but it is more relaxed and conversational. And there are no bizarre numbers where everyone on the street breaks into choreographed dance (for a spoof of this standard, see “Once More with Feeling” scene celebrating the dry cleaners getting the mustard out). Catherine Deneuve stars in this, and the whole time I kept thinking how much she looks like Jayne Plymale.
I finished reading a book my boss let me borrow, The Saskiad. It had some lovely writing, and it was a really interesting point of view, told by an amazingly well-read and imaginiative thirteen year old girl coming to terms with the usual stuff girls that age deal with, plus she grew up in a cult/commune that lost its guru, so there’s that.
The installation of the counters is delayed again, but now they swear they’ll go in next Tuesday. Uh huh. We’ll see. Party February 4, counters and sink or no.
