"Lucky Wander Boy" by D.B. Weiss

So, I finished “Lucky Wander Boy”. I was worried at first about it because in the first dozen pages, there was a line that reminded me of that forward we all sent around years ago with the really bad writing samples. The line was “She was Tower Records; the other Kashas were Napster before that fucker from Metallica went and ruined it.” I just figured it was going to be THAT kind of book. Trying to be hip and digital and all that.
But, it got better. The plot is basically that a guy gets obsessed with this rare videogame from back in the day and we follow his story with essays on geekdom and descriptions of video games along the way. The geek essay amused me because the author feels that anyone can be a geek about anything as long as the “geek loves something more than the fear and respect and desire of his fellow men and women. Comics, clothes, heroin. Anything.”
And any book with references to the fourth-wall breaking Animal Man # 19 and characters engaging in Space Giants spank-fetish porn can’t be all bad anyway. Except that the last few small chapters pretty much ruin the book for me and leave me wondering what the heck actually happened. This shouldn’t keep the more video gamically oriented of you from reading the book and I look forward to the next book this guy writes.
