So, the new ones I bought don’t really work either. See, the cabinets used to have hinges that looked like this:
We bought some that fit on the inside of the door because we thought they would work. We couldn’t find any that fit on the outside.
So, the problem is that the door fit *perfectly* into the space before. No room for an inner hinge. So, now when I try to put it back up, it is offset by something like 1/8 of an inch or some small annoying number.
So, options are:
1. Find hinge that will work.
2. Cut out enough space on each cabinet so the hinge will allow the door to sit flush.
Listening to all suggestions and considering hiring somebody to make this happen for me if I can’t figure it out soon.
The bad part is, I think we destroyed some of the hinges trying to get them off to start with, so I don’t think I can even use all the old ones.
Annoyed,
Chip
Added Friday Morning:
Bonnie sent a picture of two hinges that might work. But, let me add another picture or two.
This is how the outside hinges should fit. There is about a 1/4″ offset because of how the door fits. So, the hinge I find can’t be a flush hinge, it needs to have this offset. If I had known, I would have treated the old hinges better. I’m going to see if I can find them around the house. I know some were broken in the removal.
This is what is happening now. The hinge creates space so I could use a router (which kate has) to create a pocket for it, but that seems like an awful lot of work since I don’t know how to use a router.
1. Sometimes it is worth the money to hire a pro. If you are spending $500 of “crazy head” to figure this out, spend the cash on the service and save your sanity.
2. If you do end up doing it yourself some more, here are some hinges I found that look good, from 3000 miles away anyway.

(1st one is outside hinge, 2nd is a very non-roomy inside hinge that may work.)
In the last few houses I’ve lived in, the hinges have been these smooth hidden ones that look sort of like this one at Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=misc%2fsearchResults.jsp&BV_SessionID=@@@@1649256848.1111160244@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdfaddeeegmekfcgelceffdfgidgjn.0&MID=9876
Don’t know if they’d work for yours or not, but I do recal they were kind of adjustable.
Hm. Okay… that new info is good. Have you taken one of the non-broken old hinges into the Home Depot to ask for them to get you the closest one like it? I know you’ve probably already done that but… just in case.
The photos help. I’ll keep looking.
Enjoy your “Ice Princess.”
I just forwarded this entry to my friend Ben, who is the god of all things carpentry-related. Maybe he’ll be able to offer some suggestions.
