The Return of Advice Girl

It is good to know that Advice Girl is still out there dispensing TV related advice when needed. Hawaii has hardly changed her. I had a question concerning the new season of One Tree Hill.

Advice Girl,

What year is it taking place in now?

They jumped ahead in time four years but I thought they were just
retconning them into having graduated high school four years ago. But
then they had a flash back to three years before the current time line
and Lucas used an iPhone. So, if they are now four years in our future,
shouldn’t there be jetpacks and bubble cars because those are so right
around the corner?

I am so confused but want to understand.

Damn you, One Tree Hill.

Signed,
Totally down with two West Beverly junior years but somehow not this

Dear “Totally down”

You have to learn to distinguish between science fiction and teen
melodrama (unless you’re watching Roswell) and then adjust your
expectations accordingly. The future fast forward device in a teen
melodrama is merely a device to maintain interest in a group of
characters that the writers have already taken down every exciting
(and ridiculous) plot turn that they can imagine. “Whoa, Advice
Girl!” you say, “If they want excitement, then why not have these
nubile teens — four years into the future– pilot an exploratory
spaceship seeking out habitable planets where they can safely
fornicate and save humanity which has been decimated by the evil
Maclons?” Good question, but I return to my original response: teen
melodrama vs. science fiction– rarely the two shall meet.
