Fulton county authorities are declaring war on drugs by renovating crack houses and turning them into new homes for police officers.

The initiative, called “Cop on the Block,” kicked off Saturday when officer Harry Stephens moved into his new home on Atwood Street. The neighborhood is known for drug activity.

Fulton county District Attorney Paul Howard said Stephens’ presence in the neighborhood will make residents feel safe and send criminals packing.

“This community is tired of crime and particularly tired of crime that involves illegal drugs and this is a message to the community that we plan to take the community back street by street, house by house, community by community,” Stephens told 11Alive.

Officer Stephens will live in the home rent free for a year. The house will then be sold to a low income family
